Gift Card – Small Business – Why Aren’t You Using This?

Gift Card – Small Business – Why Aren’t You Using This?

Over the last few days I have been noticing some of the ads on TV and many of them are sharing a common theme—they’re saying THANK YOU for doing business with us, and in their case they are doing it with a gift card.

Let’s look at just a few; a health fund will say THANKYOU by giving you a $50.00 gift card for taking out top cover. An insurance company, a $100.00 gift card as a reward for doing business with them. There’s also a funeral service that would similarly love to say thanks in advance for allowing them to bury you.

So, what’s all this saying, why are they doing this? They recognise that people love to be appreciated, that we like to do business with those that acknowledge us! And because of this many of us can be bought, so to speak. Do this for us and we will give you this nice reward.

Now these large corporates are doing this in a way that maybe you and I can’t compete with. Nevertheless we can follow their example and use the principle. I must also admit that I sometimes question their motives. I wonder why they couldn’t just provide a better service and price rather than trying to buy us.

But the truth is this works. We think how nice it is of them to appreciate our business and offer a little gift and thanks. So we deal with them—in droves.

So why don’t we do this in our business?

Given that we are providing excellent value and service, why don’t we copy the principle? We can acknowledge our customers with a thankyou card in the mail. Maybe we could even include a small gift. Perhaps, if we’ve got the margin we could even add one of those gift cards.

Corporate spend a lot of time effort and money on getting their marketing right and capturing a large share of the market place. So if they have it figured out, all we have to do is follow their lead and copy them.

Small business survival in today’s market place requires more than good service and price. It also entails having genuine customer appreciation and solid business relationships. I am sure we can do this better than corporate. We can use a gift card too!

Mower Man — How Much Is A Good Relationship Worth?

Mower Man How Much Is A Good Relationship Worth?

Bob was a mower man; he had worked for himself for many years and new his trade well. Bob worked hard, often six days a week and more often than not under a baking sun. He made it his business to keep up with the latest advancements. By doing so, he no longer needed to push around a hand mower and edger, these days he rode his mower and whipper snipped the edges. He liked what he did for a living and pretty much kept to himself.

At the end of the day he was usually dog tired. Far too exhausted to joyfully attend to invoices and getting them out so he could get paid. Rather than go broke, clever Bob employed an accountant and book keeper to look after this for him. In fact she was real good and made his life a whole lot easier. She got him to put some new systems in place. Part of his systems now, was to snap a photo with his smart phone of receipts when he purchased things and email them back to her. So he now had really good records. She also provided an app so he could fill out the invoice when he completed job. He emailed this back to her on his smart phone when he finished each job. This is then promptly, printed and despatched without him ever setting pen to paper. (more…)

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Our 10 year old Grandson who now lives in Canada recently visited Australia. He and the family had not been here since he was a baby. As soon as he learned about their trip, his only request was to hold a Koala.

After much research it was discovered that Queensland was one of the few states in Australia where it is legal to hold a Koala. They choose Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary as the place to go. Thursday seemed to work the best for everyone. We booked tickets for everyone, including a tour of the Koala enclosure and a photo holding a Koala. As Sue’s elderly Dad was also joining us we also organized a mobility scooter for him.

The day finally arrived. Our Grandson was not well, suffering a burst ear drum, but nothing was going to stop his visit. On arriving at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary we booked in for our Koala experience and set off to explore. I can recommend Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary as a place to visit for all overseas visitors. The Kangaroo enclosure was the first stop. Here you could walk among the Kangaroos and feed them. A couple of joeys were hopping around as well as many larger ones. (more…)
